Thanks JH for continuing the goodness by passing this info for posting!

WHEN: Saturday, June 26, 2010
TIME: 3:30 – 4:30 PM
LOCATION: English Bay & the shores of Vancouver or water near you

From Facebook:

Join us in a silent vigil to acknowledge the animals and lives lost due to the Deepwater Horizon oil catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico and to show our concerns of an ecosystem in peril.

Please wear black and go to your nearest beach/shoreline on June 26. Take a comfy seat by the water at 4pm. Our goal is to line the entire coast of the Lower Mainland.

If you are out enjoying the day on the seawall, already at the beach, wherever you may be, grab something black, head to the shore, and help us stand up (or sit down) to an issue that affects us all. If you aren’t in Vancouver, start your own gathering if you like. Feel free to post the location or link to your event on this page.

At the time of this event, the broken oil pipe will have been spewing thousands of barrels of oil into the ocean every day for over 2 months. Entire species in that area are in danger of being wiped out. On top of it all, one of the “solutions” BP came up with was to dump hundreds of thousands of gallons of the chemical dispersant Corexit 9500 over the spill. The dispersant does not decrease the toxicity of the oil and is in fact 4 times more harmful. Dispersants break up the oil into smaller pieces that then sink in the water, forming poisonous droplets — which fish can easily mistake for food. Though all dispersants are potentially dangerous when applied in such volumes, Corexit is particularly toxic and is bioaccumulative, meaning its concentration intensifies as it moves up the food chain.

Our waters are a source of life, we must keep them healthy. Could you imagine that disaster happening where you live? Well, we all live here, these are our oceans and we need to take action.

This oil spill and others in the past highlight the inadequacies of our present system. Offshore oil drilling needs to be stopped, and once an alternative is made available, all oil drilling itself should be halted. The oil that we so frivolously use belongs to the Earth, not us, and certainly not to some company that makes billions of dollars from the sale of it.

There is power in numbers, and although you and I cannot directly stop the flow of oil that is so tragically pouring into our ocean, we can lessen our use, and let it be known that a change is needed. There are other sources of fuel out there, as well as other means of transportation. We need to start using alternative more sustainable energy sources, and fast. Don’t let this be just another disaster, let this be a call for change.

This event is rain or shine. If it’s raining, simply bring an umbrella (preferably black).

****please re-post, send invites and help spread the word, lets get as many people out there as possible! Thank you
